Making dabs through Butane extraction can be extremely dangerous as one wrong move in an unventilated area could cause a spark and ignite an entire household.
There is, however, a much easier method of extracting your resins (essential plant oils/hash) from the cannabis plant without using these products.
This process of extraction is known as the rosin technique. Rosin will be a pure concentrate of your plants medicinal properties, having a sweeter taste, and more potent effect in smaller dosages. Using the heating iron you can also produce hash oils from marijuana keif and refine your bubble hash into a more liquid, dabbable form.
The return of oil on a small nugget will yield a 7-10% rosin oil in your parchment paper and will take several nuggets to yield a lot of resin, but 7-10% percent of oil should be enough for one to two fairly decent dabs.
The effect of rosin, like all concentrates, will be much cleaner than just smoking, where changes in heat of the nugget itself produce more carbon based poisons that are consumed by open flame. Therefore, rosin, is a quicker way to getting to the point of high you want to achieve and is much healthier than smoking.
Start by placing some buds in the folded of a peice of parchment paper. Begin pressing the marijuana buds, in a hair straightener on a low temp (at about 230-300 degrees Fahrenheit) and then pushing down as firmly as possible (try using your foot applying just 3-5 seconds of pressure) on a bud wrapped in parchment paper until a viscous goo literally oozes out of the herb. Then carefully collect it off the parchment paper with a razor blade or dabbing tool, and it’s ready to use. After some trial and error I managed to yield approximately .1 gram of very tasty, high potency concentrate from a 1.4 gram bud (a 7 percent yield by weight).
Be warned though, inexperienced users may not be as ready as experienced users who know that onset may creep up on them after 10 to 15 minutes, and these are incredible highs compared to just smoking.
Producing larger amounts of solventless oil
To produce larger amounts of solventless oils you would simply need a larger flattening press like a t-shirt printing press or some kind of industrial-sized iron.
High Times has even had some very savvy rosin makers place in Cannabis Cup competitions as the technique is fast and easy, beyond that of dangerous extraction solvents, and a few days wait time on purging off the chemicals from a finished product.
