If you consumed too much alcohol last night chances are you are regretting it today. I am not here to pass judgement, as I consumed a little bit of alcohol last night myself. I’m happy to say that I do not have a hangover today, likely because I consumed about ten times as much marijuana last night as I did alcohol, and didn’t consume enough alcohol to be drunk.
But I have definitely been hungover before and it’s absolutely no fun. If you are hungover right now, you are likely looking for anything and everything that can help you feel better. There are many people out there that swear that marijuana can help cure an alcohol hangover. In order to evaluate that claim, we must first look at what an alcohol hangover involves. Per the Mayo Clinic:
- Alcohol causes your body to produce more urine. In turn, urinating more than usual can lead to dehydration — often indicated by thirst, dizziness and lightheadedness.
- Alcohol triggers an inflammatory response from your immune system. Your immune system may trigger certain agents that commonly produce physical symptoms, such as an inability to concentrate, memory problems, decreased appetite and loss of interest in usual activities.
- Alcohol irritates the lining of your stomach. Alcohol increases the production of stomach acid and delays stomach emptying. Any of these factors can cause abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting.
- Alcohol causes your blood vessels to expand, which can lead to headaches.
Marijuana does not help with dehydration, but it there is scientific evidence that marijuana helps with the other problems related to having an alcohol hangover. Many studies have shown that cannabis can help with the human body’s inflammatory response from the immune system, including a study from 2010. Marijuana has long been used to help reduce nausea, as pointed out by the American Cancer Society and numerous studies. A study from earlier this year found that marijuana helps treat headaches, which is something that previous studies have also found.
Marijuana also has an intangible quality for treating marijuana hangovers. Consuming marijuana helps consumers endure conditions that would otherwise be unbearable, including an alcohol hangover. Marijuana is not a guaranteed fix for an alcohol hangover, but it can certainly help. A person still has to re-hydrate their body, which as I previously pointed out is not something that marijuana can help with. Remember folks, marijuana is 114 times safer than alcohol, so next time you are gearing up for a party consider making the safer choice and avoiding the alcohol hangover altogether!
