How to Make Cannabutter? Recipes
Here they are:
Recipe 1: 45 Minutes
- ¼ ounce of finely ground cannabis buds
- ½ cup of unsalted butter
Take a medium saucepan and melt the unsalted butter on low head. Add the cannabis buds little at a time and keep stirring.
Once the buds have mixed finely in the melted butter, simmer the saucepan on low heat for 45 minutes; keep stirring frequently.
You should begin to see small bubbles forming. After 45 minutes, strain the butter with a strainer into an air tight container. Press the spoon against the ground bud to squeeze out all the cannabutter.
The cannabutter will have a slightly green tinge, like the image above.
Recipe 2: 5 Hours
- 2 cups of water
- 1 pound of unsalted butter
- 1 ounce of decarboxylated ground cannabis buds
Take a large saucepan and add the butter once the saucepan heats a little. As the butter begins to melt, add the water and mix them both. Bring the solution to a rapid simmer (do not boil) where small bubbles rise to the surface.
Whisk in the cannabis into the butter solution. Reduce the heat to a low simmer and let the cannabutter form. Again, do not let the mixture boil, keep the simmer to a level where only small bubbles rise to the surface.
Cover the saucepan and let the cannabutter solution cook for 5 hours; keep on stirring every 90 minutes or so. If you feel that the mixture is drying up, pour small amount of warm water.
As the 5 hours come to an end, take a large glass bowl and line a sieve with cheesecloth over it. Turn off the stove and let the mixture settle for 5 minutes. Then, pour the butter slowly on the cheesecloth and with a spatula, press down on the ground cannabis buds to squeeze out each drop of butter.
After all the butter collects in the glass bowl, discard the cheesecloth. Refrigerate the bowl for at least 3 hours or overnight. Cover the bowl with a plastic wrap. When you take out the bowl, you will see the solid water and liquid water has separated. Discard the water and remove the butter from the bowl.
Take a knife and cut the butter into pieces as you like. Store the butter pieces in a glass jar with a lid and store it in the freezer.
** Water is used in the process to leach out the chlorophyll so that the resulting butter has less of the greenish tinge, unlike in recipe 1. Also, it helps to filter all the plant matter from the butter into the water.
Why is Decarboxylation Necessary?
Without decarboxylation, raw cannabis will remain as a non-psychoactive substance. To make it a psychoactive agent, the cannabis buds needs to age and undergo a heating process. Decarboxylation is needed to unleash the complete psychoactive effects of cannabis.
Applying heat on the cannabis buds creates certain chemical reactions. When heat is applied, the cannabinoid acids are transformed into a form that the human body can use. The primary component in cannabis is deltga9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and THC is what gets you high. However, THC isn’t present in a live and growing marijuana plant. It is activated when the weed undergoes the decarboxylation (heating) process.
You can use the Magical Butter® Botanical Extractor™ for the same. It’s the world’s first kitchen table top botanical extractor. An alternative is to use a microwave oven and the process for the same is given below.
- Line a baking sheet with aluminium foil and preheat the oven to 225° F (107° C).
- Use a grinder to lightly grind the cannabis buds and spread it on the aluminium sheet.
- Bake it for 1 hour. Be prepared to see some steam, vapour and tolerate the smell.
- Take out the tray. The baked cannabis will look very brown.
The marijuana is activated now with full psychoactive potency. You can follow the above two recipes to make your own cannabutter. You can make cannabutter without decarboxylation also but it won’t give you a high.
Once the cannabutter is separated from water, make sure to dry it before putting it in the fridge; otherwise, mold will begin to form. The cannabutter can be stored in the fridge for a week or put it in the freezer to preserve its potency for months.
